Student Alcohol Consumption

This data is obtained from https://www.kaggle.com/uciml/student-alcohol-consumption. It is a survey of secondary school students from two schools in Portugal containing a lot of interesting social, gender, and study information about students, including weekday and weekend alcohol consumption on a scale of 1-5.

First, I am interested in understanding the relationship of age vs. level of alcohol consumption in the survey data. That is, do younger students tend to drink more than older students in Portugal, or vice versa? In Portugal, there is no minimum for the drinking age.

From this data visualization, here are some possible observations that we can make about the relationship of age and amount of alcohol consumption.

• On weekdays, students of all ages mostly report drinking very little (rating 1), with a slightly higher percentage of 17 and 18 year olds that self-report drinking at a rating of 2.
• On weekends, students of all ages mostly report drinking at a higher level than they do on weekdays, with students aged 17-19 experiencing the greatest increases in level of drinking. For example, around 6% of students age 17 report drinking at a moderate level; this jumps to about 27% on the weekends.
